Oil-free compressors are air compressors that operate without oil in the lubricating chamber, which eliminates the chance of contamination downstream - meaning that there isn't any chance that your end-product and application will be contaminated by oil. Rather than using oil, these compressors will utilize other types of technology such as water or Teflon-coated materials to lubricate the compression chamber. Oil-free rotary screw compressors utilize oil for lubrication of bearings and gears, which are isolated from the compression chamber. The lubricating oil, therefore, does not cause compressed air contamination. Water-injected oil-free rotary screw compressors use the injected water to remove the heat of compression. The injected water is then removed from the discharged compressed air by a conventional moisture separation device. While the purchase price and ongoing maintenance is much less, oil-free compressors typically have a product life of around 200 hours, with higher-end units lasting up to 2, 000 hours. Technology advancements in oil-free compressors have made new higher-end oil-free compressors better than old oil-free products. Eliminating oil from the air compressor helps to keep the environment safe because this type of compressor does not release contaminants into the air.
