Rather than using oil, these compressors will utilize other types of technology such as water or Teflon-coated materials to lubricate the compression chamber. Oil-free: In this type of compressor, there is no oil on the cylinder walls. Oil-free designs depend on the self-lubricating materials to allow the piston to slide in the cylinder and the grease in the sealed bearings. On air-cooled oil-free rotary screw compressors, outside air is used to cool the compressed air and the oil, and the oil is in turn used to cool the compressor elements. On water-cooled oil-free rotary screw air compressors, water is used to cool the oil, the compressed air and the compressor elements. Eliminating oil from the air compressor helps to keep the environment safe because this type of compressor does not release contaminants into the air. In addition, certain tasks might require clean and oil-free air and, therefore, cannot encounter oil contamination. Oil-free air compressors provide that peace of mind.
